Free expression is at risk worldwide due to U.S. surveillance

Edward Snowden's revelations of extensive Internet spying on U.S. citizens and foreigners has shaken up the world. To make matters worse in a space age it appears these intrusions into the privacy of people is going even further with satellite drone surveillance of anyone, anyplace, at anytime and for any reason. These horrible intrusions into the privacy of people are often used to meet political objectives by destroying the careers and lives of peaceful dissenters. U.S. surveillance actually imperils global free expression, reported Al Jazeera on Jan. 21, 2014.

Human Rights Watch has said in the group’s annual world report that the United States has set a very dangerous precedent with its pervasive surveillance apparatus and is risking undermining global Internet freedom. Human Rights Watch wants the U.S. and other states which are involved in mass surveillance and espionage to “commit to transparent and public review of their practices and laws.”

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has set the global trend for surveillance according to Human Rights Watch, reports Gulf News. It is felt the dangerous example of sweeping surveillance programs by the U.S. is giving governments an excuse for mass censorship of online communications. It is believed if this all continues there may someday be no safe haven for privacy.

What this all means is the NSA and other U.S. agencies involved in spying on private citizens feel the world should exist in their image only, for after all there are generally no serious crimes, if any crimes at all, to begin with to justify such massive surveillance. And yet what is picked up from the atrocious invasions of privacy is used by the U.S. agencies to put together false allegations of unusual conduct or even mental instability when they simply disagree with the perfectly legal positions and lifestyles of those under surveillance. Careers, families, relationships, businesses, fortunes and even entire lives are often rudely crushed in such manners.

The people hit in such manners due to invasions of their privacy would have generally had productive lives with financial security if their human rights were not so ignorantly and arrogantly violated. This is an international disgrace and makes the United States out to be anything but a free and democratic nation
with equal opportunity and justice for all. What the U.S. has instead turned out to be is a brutal fascist, repressive police state.
