When you’re in San Francisco but you’re not in the mood for sightseeing, you shouldn’t miss out on at least one of the city’s annual events. San Francisco hosts interesting events throughout the year which are suitable for people of all ages. Experiencing the city doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, especially if you attend a free event. 

 Asian Heritage Street Celebration

Organized by the AsianWeek Foundation, the Asian Heritage Street Celebration (AHSC) is a festival that showcases Asian and Pacific Islander cultures through art. Some of the attractions in this outdoor event are musical and dance performances, a parade of people wearing cultural attire, a martial arts round-up and a children’s area. Asian Heritage Street Celebrationis held every year in different neighborhoods on the third Saturday in May.

San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival

Watch the largest competitive dragon boat festival in the United States at the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival. On it’s 16th year in 2011, the festival features cultural music and dance performances, a children’s activity pavilion, food and arts and crafts vendors, and of course, dragon boat racing. In 2011, the International Dragon Boat Festival takes place on September 17 and 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Treasure Island.

Hunters Point Shipyard Artists Open Studio       

Celebrating 20 years in 2011, the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists Open Studio is an event where you can explore more than 150 artist studios in eight buildings at two sites. You’ll be able to see and shop for different kinds of paintings, printmaking, drawings, sculptures, photography, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles. The event also features artist demos and talks, food for sale and free parking. In 2011, Open Studio takes place from Saturday, April 30 to Sunday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Chinatown Autumn Moon Festival     

The Chinatown Autumn Moon Festival is a street fair on its 21st year in 2011. It celebrates the Moon Festival, a more than 1,000-year-old Chinese tradition. Presented by the Chinatown Merchants Association, this event has a street bazaar, multiple parades, martial artists, acrobats, singers and dance groups. The 2011 Chinatown Autumn Moon Festivaltakes place on September 10 and 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

San Francisco Theater Festival   

The San Francisco Theater Festival features more than 100 performances to promote the Bay Area’s live-stage theater.  The festival has shows for adults and children 12 and under, which take place in over a dozen indoor and outdoor venues. In 2011, the Theater Festival takes place in Fort Mason Center on August 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
