Free entry to Yosemite for King holiday

Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored this weekend by offering everyone free entry into Yosemite National Park.

Free admission into the park is this Saturday through Monday.

Only admission is free. Fees associated with camping, lodging or activities within the park remain.

"Visitors coming to the park over the fee free weekend are urged to be aware of the possibility of changing weather and precipitation," Yosemite officials said. "Ice on the roadways may be present throughout the park. For updated 24-hour weather and road information, please call (209) 372-0200."

The park is owned by the federal government and operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

King would have been 82 years old on Jan. 15.

Considered the leading civil rights leader in United States history, King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation creating a federal holiday to honor the slain civil rights leader.

The special day was first observed in 1986.

The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year.

The holiday was not observed in all 50 states until the year 2000.
