This week is National Severe Weather Preparedness Week across the USA. The National Weather Service has teamed up with the non-profit volunteer organization Humanity Road and launched an interactive website yesterday to bring awareness of emergency preparedness to the public, especially children and teens.
Based in Virginia, Humanity Road’s mission is to educate the public before, during and after disasters on how to survive, sustain and reunite with loved ones. The organization's volunteers are trained to use Internet and mobile communications technology to collect, verify and route information online during the onset of a sudden disaster. Using the Internet, they provide public safety information as well as directing the public to governmental and aid agencies that are providing assistance for the disaster.
This week, concerned citizens are encouraged to take a Pledge and Take Action. This year's theme is "Be Force of Nature" Readers can take the Pledge to Prepare at ready.gov/severe - weather.
When you pledge to prepare, you will take the first step to making sure that you and your family are prepared for severe weather. This includes filling out your family communications plan that you can email to yourself, putting an emergency kit together, keeping important papers and valuables in a safe place, and getting involved .
Humanity Road is promoting National Severe Weather Week with daily interactive games, videos and even puzzles and coloring books for children, youth and teens. Each day of the week has its own theme of a different type of weather event. Today's theme, for example, is tornadoes and hurricanes. They are also challenging kids with the offer of a free t-shirt.

These programs are designed for parents, teachers and homeschoolers to share with children to teach them an awareness of being prepared and ready in case disaster strikes.
