Free educational opportunities abound for today's genealogists

Today’s generation of genealogists are blessed with many opportunities for training and education at their fingertips. While there are many for-fee options available, there are also many for-free options that are as close as the nearest internet connection. Whether you are new to genealogy or a veteran of the field you are sure to find something that will challenge you and improve your skills.

FamilySearch.org is a favorite for research among genealogists. However, they are also well known for their educational offerings. In addition to a research wiki and discussion forum, FamilySearch.org offers virtual research courses for free. Here you’ll find video, audio, and slide-based training on a wide variety of topics including those related to geographic area, document type, or research skill. Courses are available from a beginning to advanced level, so everyone is sure to find something that fits their needs or interests.

AmericanAncestors.org, website for the New England Historic Genealogical Society, provides another option for free education and skill building. A variety of virtual courses ranging from short video presentations to a wonderful three-part series, Getting Started in Genealogy, are available for viewing. The courses on this website are both clear and accessible to genealogists of all skill levels. Though the library isn’t as extensive as FamilySearch.org, each presentation is well-made and worth the time invested.

Legacy Family Tree, makers of a widely used free genealogy software package as well as other programs for purchase, offers a fantastic series of free live webinars throughout the month. Using slide presentations and live audio the webinars offer the viewer a chance to learn from experts in the field. Amazingly, they provide excellent information for all regardless of skill level. Attendees can register for the live webinar and will receive a reminder before the event. These webinars are typically available for viewing for a limited time after the original airing. However, they are available for purchase at a later date. The appeal of these webinars is a combination of the variety of the subjects offered and talent of the presenters. They are definitely a gem among genealogy educational opportunities.

Though these are not the only options available for free education and skill building, they will give any genealogist an opportunity to pursue continuing education while keeping it easy on the checkbook. With the three websites listed above one can learn the skills needed to take their ability to the next level.
