Levi's Pioneer Sessions 2010 Revival Recordings has been offering free downloads of classic songs from today's hot young artists this summer including Colbie Caillat, Nas, She & Him and The Swell Season. The latest offering is a free download of "Spirit in the Sky" from Jason Mraz which was released on June 17.
Jason Mraz started singing his cover version of the 1970 Norman Greenbaum hit at his live concerts in 2009. He performed the song at Farm Aid in St. Louis and at his free concert in San Diego both in October 2009.
Mraz explained his inspiration for singing the classic song:
"'Spirit in the Sky' is the kind of song that makes a certain friend of mine dance like I've never known anyone to dance. This is a friend, a mentor, a teacher. an inspiration to many of us in our community. I originally covered this song on tour and so when I got to his city I really wanted to tribute that song for him so I could see him dance from where I was on stage."
