Interested in designing? The West Hollywood Design District is presenting Design Intersects Everything Made (DIEM) on Friday, November 8, 2013. RSVP here for a variety of complimentary events before they are filled!
Frances Anderton, the host of KCRW's DnA: Design and Architecture, curates the second annual one-day design symposium, DIEM, to inspire and encourage integral design. The morning kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with a light breakfast, followed by Anderton interviewing Mallery Roberts Morgan, a longtime Paris resident who worked at Paris Vogue and is the Los Angeles correspondent of AD France (French Architectural Digest). Morgan will discuss her favorite designers in LA, and why her French friends think LA design is trés chic at the moment. The event will be held at the Rose Tarlow Melrose House (323.651.2202) at 8540 Melrose Avenue.
Los Angeles's art scene is expanding with blue-chip “warehouse” galleries around La Brea and Highland. Hear art critic Shana Nys Dambrot discuss how architectural setting informs the experience of art with Coagula founder and gallerist Mat Gleason, Perry Rubenstein, owner of Perry Rubenstein Gallery, and artist Jay Mark Johnson at 11:15 a.m. The talk will be held at Woven Accents (310.652.6520), 8674 Melrose Avenue.
Lunch intermission is at 12:30 p.m. at Niche (310.855.1755) at 8770 Beverly Boulevard, where Jonathan Skow will discuss being Mr. Turk (Trina Turk's husband). Skow, a photographer, has launched his own line of men’s clothing, Mr Turk. Discover how he built the line and faced the challenge of “balancing sexuality and tastefulness in social media."
Is copying an art or a crime? Ray Azoulay, owner of Obsolete, Bianca Bosker, Executive Tech Editor for Huffington Post and author of Original Copies: Architectural Mimicry in Contemporary China, will discuss this hot-button issue with design and media consultant Marissa Gluck at 2:15 p.m. Head over to Poliform - Varenna (310.271.7836) at 8818 Beverly Boulevard to hear their opinions.
Want to add your own two cents? Join the "What Do You Think?" roundtable at 3:30 p.m. at Christopher Guy (310.461.3250) at 8900 Beverly Boulevard. Anderton will host a dialogue between all DIEM attendees about a hot topic that will not be announced until the event. A challenging question will be posed to attendees, who will break out into groups to discuss. Then, they will share conclusions with the crowd.
Instagram devotee? The final event at 4:45 p.m. focuses on "Art Photography and the Age of Instagram." Picture this: a panel and cocktail reception on the terrace of Leica’s glam new location on Beverly at Robertson. Charles Phoenix, dubbed Ambassador of Americana, will moderate the discussion with Patricia Lanza, director of talent and content at Annenberg Space for Photography, and Cristopher Lapp, fashion photographer and author of Instant Gratification - 21st Century Art and the Mobile Phone.
