Not all US military veterans have access to quality, affordable dental care after serving this country at home and abroad. The staff of the Sacramento Dentistry Group want to help, and are offering free services to veterans on Saturday, November 9.
Dr. Erik Matson, a 6-year veteran of the US Navy, is spearheading the effort.
Matson, who earned his doctorate in dental medicine after his military service, says he feels lucky and wants to share his skills with fellow veterans.
“I met a lot of good people in the military, and some of them aren’t doing as well as I am,” says Matson, adding, “It’s time for me to give back.”
In honor of Veteran’s Day, local vets may receive free limited exams, x-rays, extractions and fillings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the dental group’s Sacramento location on E Street.
“It is first come, first serve,” Matson says, but they hope to have more such clinics in the future. Multiple dentists will be working on that day in order for a maximum number of vets to be served.
Participants must bring a copy of their DD214 discharge papers or VA Medical Benefits card.
Sacramento’s Don Harper is an American Legion Post Commander and current Legislative Chair for the Veterans Affiliated Council. He is assisting Matson in planning and promoting the event.
According to Harper, the US Department of Veteran Affairs facilitates dental insurance coverage for those who are 100% disabled and have a service-related dental issue. A one-time dental visit is available within 180 days of discharge to some "career" vets, meaning those who have served at least 20 years,
“But there is a huge gap,” Harper says, between those two categories, of veterans that do not have coverage. Untreated dental problems can cause serious damage and pain, so ideas like this free event are very important.
