Free festivals are always a great excuse to get out of the house and dance! Forest Park Ribfest is coming September 14 to Forest Park, IL. This is a free outdoor festival with music and entertainment, but food and drinks do require money. They have many great bands on the schedule, including Rockford natives Mr. Big Stuff.
A great annual tradition in Rockford is the World War II Days at Midway Village Museum. This year it will occur September 21-22. And in this dancer’s opinion, the best part is the free USO-style swing dance on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. For the second year now, the dance will be hosted off-site at Veterans Memorial Hall. (see previous article for photos) So come in your best 1940’s garb, and dance to some great old-time hits provided by Moonlight Jazz Orchestra! Be advised that parking is limited, and many will need to find space along the street. Meaning the later you arrive, the longer you should expect to walk to and from the event.
September also holds the annual Stillman Valley Fall Festival. This festival is a long tradition dating back to 1937. This weekend of fun will be the 27th-29th. Music, food, fireworks, craft show: they have it all! Some attractions, such as the live music, are free. Whereas others, such as the carnival rides, do cost money. The festivities also include a street dance on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.!
