Free crochet patterns: winter accessories from Crochet World

Winter is here. It blew through the Mid-West this week with a vengeance. Don’t get caught out in the cold. Just in time for the next blizzard, Crochet World, an Annie’s publication, has a free downloadable crochet pattern for winter accessories. These items crochet up in a jiffy with chunky yarn. Included in the pattern are a hat, scarf, leg warmers, and wristers. Make several to give as last minute gifts. Change the hat and scarf from pink to grey and they become great gifts for the man in your life.

Making changes to the pattern

You will need 8 balls of Lion Brand Jiffy yarn. This is a bulky, size 5 yarn. The skein is 135 yards. Jiffy is acrylic yarn. If you do not want to use acrylic, any natural fiber that is rated as bulky is a good choice. For 100 percent natural fibers try wool, baby alpaca, angora, or cotton. For baby alpaca and angora you may have to use two strands of yarn to get the correct bulk.

Determining how much yarn you will need is a simple math calculation. The pattern as written calls for eight skeins of yarn, each skein is 135 yards. Multiply 8 time 135 to get 1,080 yards. You yarn label or wrapper will tell you how large the skein of yarn is. There are two pieces of information given. The first is the weight and the second is length. To determine how much yarn to use, go by length. If you are doubling up on your yarn by using two strands, then you will need to double the amount of yarn needed to 2,160 yards.

The leg warmers and scarf are easily adjusted for kids, just crochet fewer rows. Hope you enjoy this pattern.
