Easter is the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. Can you imagine walking along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem with two children and a sacrificial lamb? One moment you are on your way to the temple to perform a sacrifice, and the next you are caught up in a mob that is fixated on crucifying Jesus.
Can you imagine your horror as your children witness the beaten and bloody Jesus carrying His own cross to Golgatha? Then your day gets even worse. Here comes a Roman guard. He is pointing at you. He wants you to carry the cross of Jesus the rest of the way. He has his hand on his sword. There is no use resisting. You obey the guard, but are fearful your children may get trampled by the pressing crowd. “Stay close,” you tell them.
You deliver the cross and watch in horror as Jesus is nailed to the cross. You try to shield your children from the sight and get away, but the crowd presses closer. The children are upset because they lost the sacrificial lamb. The sky suddenly turns black. Jesus cries out in a loud voice, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” You gasp and try to follow the conversations around you. Then Jesus cries out one final time, and yields His spirit. It hits you all at once – JESUS IS THE SACRIFICE.
