Free community Constitution classes set to begin April 24

A group of area citizens have come together to plan and present a series of five classes and discussions on the Constitution of the United States, which will begin Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at Friendship Hall, 1001 N. 2nd Street in Montrose. Each session will feature a pre-recorded 40-minute lecture from the Constitution 101 online course offered by Hillsdale College. A 20-minute open discussion will follow the lecture, which will be moderated by various community members. Free handouts of the resources mentioned in the lecture will be available as well.

The classes are the result of over a year of preparation by a group of locals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. Their goal is to provide a forum for learning about the Constitution and its purpose. As group members have sounded out the community, they have found a great deal of interest in the Constitution and in getting together to study it. As one women said, "You don't talk about what you don't know".

The schedule of classes and discussion leaders is as follows:

  • Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. - "The Meaning and History of the Constitution", moderated by Paul Paladino, director of the Montrose Regional Library District
  • Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. - "The Declaration of Independence", moderated by Kay Alexander, former member of the Colorado House of Representatives
  • Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. -"The Problem of Majority Tyranny", moderated by Jim Kerschner, director of KUBC radio
  • Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. -"Separation of Powers: Preventing Tyranny", moderated by Martin Maloney, history teacher at Montrose High School
  • Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. -"Separation of Powers: Ensuring Good Government", moderated by Martin Maloney
