If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, you’re in luck. According to an NPR report published on May 2, a “holiday” fit for superheroes is just hours away and people around the world are ready to celebrate! So move over, Batman and grab that cape, Superman! May 3, 2014, is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) and participating stores across the globe will be giving away special comic books for free!
Free Comic Book Day 2014
First observed in 2002, FCBD was created by comic book retailer, Joe Field. The international event takes place each year on the first Saturday in May. This year, participating stores will be giving away nearly 60 specifically produced comic books from well-known publishers including Marvel, DC, Archie and Valiant. And just a few of this year’s selection include Street Fighter, Buck Rogers, Archie Digest, Atomic Robo, Les Miserables, Sherwood Texas, Scratch 9 and Sonic the Hedgehog. And with the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie swinging into theaters today, superheroes are pretty big right about now.
Whether you consider yourself a comic book collector or novice, comic books captivate and entertain both young and old alike. FCBD celebrates the art of comic books, the independent stores that sell them and the loyal fans who love them. So why not gather up the kiddies and head on over to your nearest participating independent comic book store and pick up a free comic book? And for even more fun - why not dress up like your favorite comic book character? Just be sure to arrive early – there may be a line. Please note - Be sure to check with your local store for specifics rules.
