Free coffee classes at the Open Eye Cafe in Carrboro

The Open Eye Café, located on the corner of South Greensboro and Roberson Streets in downtown Carrboro, offers a series of free classes in the art and science of coffee on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7pm.

The cafe is owned and operated by Scott Conary, a World Barista Certified (WBC) coffee professional, who served as head judge at the competition held during the Specialty Coffee Association of America's (SCAA) annual convention, the largest gathering of coffee professionals in the U.S., as well as other barista competitions around the world. Scott is one of only 7 judges from the U.S. to have passed the certification class, and the only judge from NC.

Scott has lived in the region since 1995, and has made it his mission to combine coffee quality with sustainability. He established the Open Eye Café, known as "Carrboro's Living Room," as well as Carrboro Coffee Roasters, roasting the best quality coffees the world has to offer. Scott also owns Cafe Driade in Chapel Hill.

Open Eye Café received the TOPS Award from the Specialty Coffee Association of America, recognizing "specialty coffee retailers that are committed to differentiating themselves through excellence."

Topics covered by the free seminars include:

  • Coffee Tasting 101
  • Coffee Equipment & Home Use
  • Coffee Cupping
  • Espresso 101 at Home & in the Café
  • Tea Tasting 101

The March seminar, scheduled for March 18, will cover coffee brewing equipment for home and travel.

RSVP to or call 919-968-9410, as space is limited.

The cafe also sponsors a free film series on the 2nd Thursday of every month, featuring films from the PBS Independent Lens series.

Poetry open mic nights, live music performances, and art exhibits by local artists are some of the cafe's other offerings.

In addition to quality coffees and teas, Open Eye also serves Kelley G Cupcakes, baked locally in small batches using all natural and organic ingredients, as well as sandwiches made by Neal's Deli using local products. Free WiFi access is available inside or on the patio.
