Free Class in Beaverton on Logical Fallacies

See also

The Center for Philosophical Naturalism is offering a free drop-in class on the topic of logical fallacies. The first class will be held on Thur. Feb. 27 and is called "How to sell snake oil." Event details can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Philosophical-Naturalists/events/155899702/ . If you would like to learn even more, look at the posted class material prior to class to come up-to-speed.

The class series will go over some of the most popular logical fallacies that people both use, and fall for. What is a logical fallacy? Simply put, it is an error in logical thinking, which makes it unlikely to be able to draw a reasonable conclusion. In this session we will discuss these three fallacies:

1. Burden of Proof. This is the point that the one making the claim is the one required to give evidence for it. If I claim to be from another planet and that you should give me money to save you from an impending meteor hit to the Earth, you might want to ask for some evidence before you sell all you have to give to me. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

2. Strawman. This is when a person misrepresents their opponent's view in a silly way, so it is easier to destroy.

3. Ad Hominem. This is when a person in a debate responds with a personal attack, which has nothing to do at all with the logical argument.

According to the instructor, Bernie Dehler, those attending will have a chance to learn these fallacies by coming up with their own examples. In the process, they'll also meet some new people and make some new friends.
