The latest installment of RUI: Reading Under the Influence brings together the forces behind the spring festival of writers, Story Week, and the heralded One Book, One Chicago program of the Chicago Public Library. If you present or register for a Chicago Public Library card, you qualify for a free copy (while supplies last) of the Spring 2012 selection, Gold Boy, Emerald Girl by Yiyun Li.
One round of original work and one round of trivia relating to the theme of "One Book One Chicago Meets Story Week" will be read by four stalwarts in the Fiction Writing Department at Columbia College Chicago, producers of Story Week. Fiction Writing Chair(for now) Randy Albers, Fiction Writing professors Eric May and Ann Hemenway (also this year's Columbia College Distinguished Faculty Fellow) and Fiction Dept. administrative whiz/Chicago writer Nicole Chakalis.
The Fiction Writing Department has been in the news lately, partly due to AWP and Story Week, which is free and open to the public from March 18-23, and features Bonnie Jo Campbell, Christine Sneed, Nami Mun, Megan Stielstra, Patty McNair and other guests at previous RUIs. Rally behind great readings, have a good time, and win books and potables.
RUI is in the back-back room at Sheffield's, 3258 N. Sheffield Ave. There's a $3 cover(ages 21+). Grab a seat, a bite to eat and a drink at 7 p.m., readings begin at 7:30 p.m. The audience is welcome to stick around afterward for conversation with the authors.
