The free BlackBerry BBM app for iPhone has just hit the App Store, according to an Oct 21 report in c/net. The app is ready for downloading now and will go live in about one hour, states BlackBerry's blog.
There's just one hitch.
Because BlackBerry is rolling out its service to minimize network issues, BlackBerry fans get to use this free BBM app immediately (because they signed up at the official site earlier). Everyone else can download the free app now, but will only be able to start using this renowned messaging service after they receive an email notifying them when they can—as BlackBerry moves millions of people through a digital waiting line.
According to a post on BlackBerry's blog, BlackBerry assures everyone that it is doing everything possible to move everyone though this digital waiting line as quickly as possible.
The demand for BBM service is huge. BlackBerry says that at least six million people have signed up so far. While the free iOS BBM app is hitting the App Store now for iPhone, the Android BBM app is launching on Google Play (Google's version of the App Store) at the same time for Android devices.
The excitement surrounding the release of Blackberry's free BBM app, seems surprising at first glance since the company's latest phone was a commercial failure and the company is retrenching. But BlackBerry's loss of handset sales overshadows the fact that the BlackBerry messaging service has always been popular—and still is—because it is very private and secure.
It is so secure that the Secret Service lets the president use it.
What makes it so private?
Rather than using phone numbers or email addresses to connect with others, BlackBerry BBM use PINs, so you always control how you share information and who can contact you. And, with '2-way opt in', you control who can message you.
Other cool benefits to BlackBerry's free BBM app:
You can chat with friends regardless of what phone they have—iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry
You can share photos, files, documents and more with one contact, or a group of contacts
You know when your message has been delivered, read and when contacts are responding
You can have multi-person chats
You can send broadcast messages (one message to multiple contacts)
You can create your own BBM profile with images, as well as pics (both still and animated)
You can update your status and even let people know how you feel with emoticons
It's worth repeating: this cool BlackBerry BBM app—which is optimized for iOS 7—is free and available for download now from the App Store.
