Celebrate Black History month starting on February 1, 2013. Teachers and parents can help children learn more about African-Americans who have changed the world with the printable worksheets, coloring pages, lesson plans, educational videos and activities listed below.
An entire month of events are planned nationwide to honor the contributions of people like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Shirley Chisholm, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 2013 Black History Month theme is "At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington."
This year, there are three anniversaries that are important to discuss in the classroom and at home:
- The Emancipation Proclamation: 150 years ago on Jan. 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln's proclamation officially went into effect, setting the United States on the path of ending slavery.
- The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom: August 28, 2013 will mark 50 years since hundreds of thousands of Americans, both black and white, joined the March on Washington to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial.
- Martin Luther King's Speech: On the same day as the March on Washington back in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his 17-minute "I Have a Dream" speech to over 200,000 civil rights supporters on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial
