The first winter storm of the year dropped substantial amounts of snow across Montana over the weekend. Before heading out with your skiis or snowshoes, it is a good idea to prepare for the possible dangers created by snowy trail conditions. Every year hundreds of people are caught in avalanches while enjoying winter recreation activities. Knowledge of how to evaluate avalanche hazards will dramatically reduce the risks of being caught in an avalanche.

This Wednesday, November 14, the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center is putting on a free avalanche awareness seminar at The Base Camp here in Billings. The seminar begins at 6:30 pm and is free and open to the public. According to The Base Camp website, the seminar “will utilize visual presentation and discussion to illustrate terrain, snowpack, weather and human factors which influence decisions made during wintertime travel in the backcountry.” A raffle will be held to raise money for Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (GNFAC). GNFAC is a non-profit organization that works to promote avalanche awareness and education.

The Base Camp is located at 1730 Grand Avenue. Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn about avalanche safety – it just might save your life.
