Free Art Education events from Smithsonian American Art Museums

January is full of free inspiring and educational art talks, exhibitions and film screenings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and its partner, the Renwick Gallery.

Discover more about the exhibition, 'Nam June Paik: Global Visionary,' meet and hear from artist Marc Maiorana, meet and learn from Museum Conservators about caring for their collections, or join a rousing discussion about modern and contemporary art in 'Is This Art?'

'One program that we're particularly excited about is a sneak preview screening of 40 Under 40, a documentary that goes behind-the-scenes of the '40 under 40: Craft Futures' exhibition.

'The special screening is on January 10 at the museum's main building, and the show will air on the Smithsonian Channel on January 15.'

Sneak Preview Screening: '40 Under 40,' January 10 at 4 p.m.

'Some of them move. Others make noise. One weighs in at 700 pounds. Collectively, they represent the future of contemporary craft.

'40 under 40: Craft Futures,' a wildly creative and diverse exhibition assembled for the 40th anniversary of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, is about to open.

'Smithsonian Channel takes us behind-the-scenes to experience the challenges and rewards of bringing together 40 unique artists at the top of their craft.'

The screening will be introduced by Nicholas Bell, The Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator of American Craft and Decorative Art at the Renwick Gallery. Mr. Bell organized the exhibition, 'Nam June Paik: Global Visionary,' which is open on the 3rd floor North, through August 11, 2013.

'Conservation of Our Collection, The Hampton Throne,' January 9 at 12:30 p.m. Meet in the G Street Lobby.

Listen as museum conservators discuss the techniques they used and the challenges they encountered in the recent conservation of the museum's beloved Hampton Throne.

Luce Artist Talk: Wyckham Avery, January 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Join SAAM for a talk by local performing artist Wyckham Avery. Wyckham will share excerpts from her latest project, Just Sing Me a Song, a solo show based on the life and music of folk singer Ola Belle Reed. This talk is presented with CulturalDC's Flashpoint Gallery.

'Is This Art?' January 17 at noon, Lincoln Gallery, SAAM, third floor.

'Baffled by abstract expressionism? Scratching your head over pseudo-realism? Join us for Is This Art?, a discussion guided by a staff member that allows free-flowing discussion about art in the museum's modern and contemporary art galleries.'

The following events will take place at the Renwick Gallery, Pennsylvania Avenue at 17th Street N.W.

Screening: 'Between the Folds,' January 16 at noon.

A film profiling a group of artists and scientists who have devoted their lives to the medium of modern origami, Between the Folds includes 40 under 40 artist Eric Demaine, who will be on hand to introduce the documentary, answer questions, and demonstrate his work.

Explore the 40 under 40 galleries one more time before the exhibition closes Feb. 3. Hear first-hand from curator Bell about the 40 artists whose work caught his eye and are paving the way for the future of the Renwick Gallery's collection of contemporary craft.
