Ongoing over the weekend
- Nature Seen in Brooklyn, Now and Then / An Artist's Sketchbook Journals exhibition at the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public LIbrary. Friday 9-6 and Saturday 10-6. Free.
- Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present. This exhibition of photographs is the first major museum exhibition on rock and roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music. At the Brooklyn Museum of Art through January 31st. Suggested admission is $10 (but you can pay less).
Friday, October 30th
- 7:00 PM: Matvei Yankelevich, founder of Brooklyn's Ugly Duckling Press, reads his own poetry at the Outpost Lounge on Fulton Street. Free.
- 7-10 PM: World-renowned boutique, film-camera maker, and record label Powershovel plants roots in DUMBO's Powerhouse Arena. Come sample the grooves and the swank camera style of Tokyo's über-cool, old-school photo-music manufacturer. Free.
- 9:30 PM: MIss Fairchild, "original soul pop with humor, joy an surplus energy," is playing at the BAMcafé. Free.
Saturday, October 31st

3:00 PM: Pistachio: A Brooklyn Girl Made From Trash at Still Hip in Clinton Hill. Each week there is another episode of this musical play in which a girl made from recycled trash protects the community and the world from bad garbage. The performance is free. A recycled puppet-making and acting workshop follow the performance for $10. Ages 3 and up.
Sunday, November 1st
- The New York City Marathon: runners will be going through Brooklyn from approximately 10 AM until noon. See the map and schedule.
- 1:00 PM: Exploring the Marsh in Autumn Nature Hike at Marine Park. Free.
- 4-5 PM: Readings of Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes and Fu Finds the Way at the Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO with author-illustrators Sujean Rim and John Rocco. Kids ages 4-8. Free.
- 7-9 PM: "Looking": An Evening with Rebecca Baron & Douglas Goodwin, CA Conrad, Wayne Koestenbaum, Eileen Myles, and Maggie Nelson. This evening brings together four writers and two filmmakers whose work investigates the nature of perception and articulation. At Cabinet on Nevins Street. Free.
