Earlier this morning, safety Dashon Goldson joined 95.7 The Game's morning show and talked about his current situation with the 49ers. Goldson is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13.
"If I'm not back in San Francisco, I'd be very shocked," Goldson said. "Guys are excited about me being there and I'm sure they want me back. They've expressed how much they want me back and I want to be back there. Like I said, if I'm not there, I'd be shocked."
After last season, Goldson declined a five-year offer from the 49ers in hopes of getting a better deal with another team. When Goldson was unable to secure a better offer, he signed a one-year contract with the 49ers. He ended up having a Pro Bowl season, leading the team with six interceptions during the regular season.
If the 49ers offer a five-year offer to Goldson again, it is expected that the safety would likely accept. If a deal cannot be made, it is very likely that Goldson would get the franchise tag for $6.2 million. His presence on the field was well-noticed and his play along with strong safety Donte Whitner helped develop the secondary into one of the league's best.
"We've got to keep building," Goldson said of the team's goals for the defense next season. "There's always room for improvement. We started off slow in the season last year, the first couple games.
"We just got it tuned into the little things and how any moment, any play can change the game. Just little things like that. Sharpen up and continue to do what we're doing."
