National Association of Women in Construction Block Kids Building Competition

The annual Block Kids building competition, a national competition, is sponsored locally by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Colorado Springs Chapter 356. This award-winning program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry. The program is open to all elementary school children (boys and girls) in grades 1- 6. The one-day competition, to be held at the Leon Young Center in Colorado Springs, involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: a small rock, string, foil, and/or poster board. Using photographs of their projects, local winners advance to a regional competition, and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the national competition. National prizes, usually savings bonds, are awarded to the top three projects, but all students, regardless of their placement in the contest, leave the local competition with a goodie bag and a certificate of participation. The top ten local winners, judged on their structure and an oral interview, leave with larger prizes, usually Lego or construction sets. Registration and participation in the competition is free, but is limited to the first 40 students to register by February 1, 2010. The registration form can be downloaded at http://nawic356.org/committees/blockkids.htm.
