It is hard to believe that it has been ten years this month that horror fans flocked to theaters to see the greatest rivalry in horror cinema. Freddy vs. Jason a film decades in the making, takes two of our favorite horror villains and place them in a brutal fight to the finish.
The film centers on Freddy Krueger (from the Nightmare on Elm Street series) no longer able to scare the local teens in fictional Springwood, Ohio searches for a way to regain his powers. In true Nightmare fashion Freddy resurrects and manipulates Jason Voorhees (from the Friday the 13th series) through Jason's mother to instill fear back into the lives of teenagers. This was a successful plan, however what Freddy does not realize is that Jason is a force to be reckoned with. Through Jason's actions and unable to stop him Freddy seeks not only vengeance on the teenagers of Springwood but on the monster he revived. Thus, sending two of the greatest horror villains on an epic battle of brawn vs. brain.
Freddy vs. Jason was a box office success that introduced newer audiences to both the Nightmare and Friday series, while simultaneously reacquainting fans to our two villains. With a cast of seasoned and up and coming actors at that time, this film broke ground in horror cinema even ten years later. Not to mention this would be Robert Englund's final appearance as the dastardly Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley played Krueger in the 2010 remake).
But there is one thing that has ignited controversy since the debut of this film which sparks arguments even today. Who was truly the winner of this bitter rivalry Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees?
