A new report states that the now ex-communicated leader of the controversial group Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps is “on the edge of death.” Politico quotes spokesperson Steve Drain, who states that Phelps has been moved to an undisclosed care facility in Shawnee County, Kansas.

“I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems. He's an old man, and old people get health problems,” Drain stated. However, information revealed through Phelps’ ostracized son Nate Phelps posted on Facebook shows the situation for the 84-year-old is indeed dire.

Nathan Phelps wrote on Facebook, “I’ve learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the ‘church’ back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.” Continuing, he wrote, “I’m not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.”

As Phelps made a public spectacle by protesting military funerals or funerals of those whom he felt he could use to signify God’s judgment on humanity, some are calling for the same treatment after Phelps passes. Many are joining forces now, planning to picket or boycott Phelps’ funeral when he passes. Some are even asking what the correct response is for Phelps’ demise and ultimate death.

It is ironic indeed that Phelps was ex-communicated from the church he founded. Westboro Baptist Church is famous for their slogan, “God Hates Fags,” and is deemed a “hate” group by many due to the way the church members conduct themselves, the things they say, and the way they protest and picket innocent victims’ funerals and military heroes.
