Organizers at the Nature Valley First Tee Open, to be held at Pebble Beach and Del Monte Golf Course, September 23-29, have announced the addition of World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples to the tournament field. Couples, the 1992 Masters champion, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame earlier this year, and is currently ranked 5th in the Schwab Cup standings on the Champions Tour.
A number of other World Golf Hall of Fame members are in the field at this year’s event: 1984 & 1995 Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, 1992 US Open winner (at Pebble Beach) Tom Kite, 8-time European Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie, 1985 & 1993 Masters champion Bernhard Langer, 1985 Open Championship winner & 1988 Masters champion Sandy Lyle, 1992 & 1994 PGA champion and 1994 Open Championship winner Nick Price, 1981 & 1987 PGA champion and 1983 US Open champion Larry Nelson, and 3-time US Open champion (1974, 1979, & 1990) Hale Irwin.
Hale Irwin was the 2005 First Tee Open champion in 2005; Ben Crenshaw and junior partner Casie Cathrea, of Livermore, teamed up for the Pro/Jr team win in 2011.
The Nature Valley First Tee Open pairs professionals with amateur contestants and junior golfers from around the country on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course, benefitting The First Tee. The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, provides young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop life-enhancing values through golf and character education.
The tournament is hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, which also stages the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am; that world-famous tournament has generated over $110 million for charity since its inception in 1937.
Clint Eastwood is chairman of the Nature Valley First Tee Open, Arnold Palmer is honorary co-chair. Play will be conducted on both courses Friday and Saturday and on Pebble Beach only on Sunday.
