Fraternity sex change: Fraternity raises money for student's surgery

A fraternity paid for a sex change for one of their new frat brothers. On Feb. 27, CNN reported that 20-year-old Donnie Collins was shown amazing amounts of support after he joined the Phi Alpha Tau at Emerson College in Boston. Collins found out that his insurance company was not going to pay for his (upper) sex-change surgery.

Collins' new frat brothers wanted to help and so they did. The guys set up an online fundraiser and launched a campaign to help Collins. They set their goal for $8,100 -- the amount of money that Collins needed for his surgery, which will remove breast tissue and give him a flat chest.

The fraternity sex change campaign was done on the site "Indiegogo.com." According to CNN, the guys managed to raise double their goal, bringing in $16,000 to help Collins -- and to raise awareness. Collins will now be able to continue his transformation from female to male and he has some great friends to thank -- and some amazingly generous supporters too.

"I'm overwhelmed and surprised. I can't thank everyone enough," said Collins. Naturally he is so thankful for people's donations and he is very lucky to have the support of his brothers, who probably feel a lot like family.

This fraternity sex change story is making news around the country today. Collins is planning to have his surgery in May.
