Whereas many children have already returned to school, it's not too late to create a few great family memories before summer 2010 officially ends. For an extra special treat, pack up the family and a portable dinner and head on over to Franklin Canyon Park this Wednesday evening. There, at the amphitheater, you'll be able to enjoy a nature program, along with campfire songs and associated activities. As an added delight, event organizers supply skewers and marshmallows, so that everyone can do some roasting. (If you're in the mood for s'mores, however, you'll have to bring your own graham crackers and chocolate slabs.)
Wednesday's get-together marks the end of the campfire series this season. Over the past several weeks, a different nature theme was explored at each gathering. This week's theme is especially of interest because the MRCA (Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority) Fire Crew will be on hand to teach attendees about fire safety and related topics. As part of the program, firefighters bring in fire trucks and fire equipment so that participants can have a real hands-on experience. Children may even have the opportunity to try on fire-safety gear, so be sure to bring your camera.
Also located in Franklin Canyon is The Sooky Goldman Nature Center, which offers a variety of year-round children's programs, including hikes led by volunteer naturalists. Often there are associated art projects, reading activities, and kid-friendly lectures so that children can get fit while also learning about local wildlife, plant life, the planets, Native American culture, and more.
The MRCA is a local government body that works in coordination with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, a state agency, and other local park agencies in the Conejo Valley and Simi Valley communities. Working in conjunction with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the MRCA manages and preserves approximately 60,000 acres of public lands and parks in Southern California. The endless recreational opportunities in these regions are geared to people of all ages, as well as all levels of fitness.
The 90-minute campfire program under the stars is just one of the many activities held throughout the year at Franklin Canyon. Although technically located in Beverly Hills, Franklin Canyon is easily accessible from the San Fernando Valley by taking Coldwater Canyon south.
(Franklin Canyon Park's campfire program will be held on Wednesday, September 1, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The park is located at 2600 Franklin Canyon Drive, Beverly Hills 90210. For additional information call: (310) 858-7272 ext. 131. This event is free; parking is free, too.)
