Frank Sinatra's My Funny Valentine

With the arrival of February and the 14th, we celebrate romance. For singers, naturally, it means "My Funny Valentine." This song written by Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart for the Broadway musical "Babes In Arms" has become the anthem of lovers.

Now, please read the lyrics carefully

My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't  change one hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day

In the show, the female lead, Billie Smith sings the song to Valentine "Val" LaMar a MAN.  Valentine was played by Ray Heatherton. Those of us raised in the greater New York City area may remember Ray as the "Merry Mailman' on WOR-TV. The song has been recorded hundreds of times, but my favorite is by Frank Sinatra.
