Frank Lloyd Wright Ennis House
A Frank Lloyd Wright home - the Ennis House - will return to private ownership if a buyer can come up with $15,000,000 for this fixer-upper.
The LA estate is the location for "Blade Runner" "Twin Peaks" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
It also appeared in "House on Haunted Hill," where, writes movie historian Leonard Maltin, Vincent Price offers $10,000 to anyone who'll spend a night in this "spooky old mansion with murder-laden history."
Then there are "Day of the Locust," "Black Rain," "Predator 2," "The Karate Kid Part III," "The Thirteenth Floor," "Rush Hour," and several more.
Ennis House is considered endangered.
The Ennis House Foundation has stablized the 6,000 square foot house after years of decay and damage from earthquakes and torrential rain.
In March 2005, it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's most-endangered list.
"Our goal has always been to be a good steward of the house,"
said the foundation's president, James DeMeo.
"We've made a lot of progress, but at this point a private owner with the right vision and sufficient resources can better preserve the house than we can as a small nonprofit,"
The Frank Lloyd Wright designed Ennis House is on top of a hill in the Los Felize area of Los Angeles. The Mayan-inspired home was built in 1924 using 27,000 16 inch concrete blocks. It is one of four homes in the "textile block" genre built by the legendary architect.
"I fully support the Ennis House returning to private ownership,"
said Eric Lloyd Wright, grandson of the architect.
"My grandfather designed homes to be occupied by people. His homes are works of art. He created the space, but the space becomes a creative force of its own and uplifts when it is lived in every day,"
The house was donated to the trust by the previous owners and estimates are it will take $5-$7 million to bring up to living standards.
