According to teasers for Fran Drescher's Friday, January 28 The Oprah Winfrey Show appearance, you'd think she and ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson were only there to discuss the end of their marriage as part of Oprah's Most Memorable Couples update. They do indeed discuss Peter's coming to terms with his homosexuality and the eventual end of their marriage--old news since it happened more than ten years ago--but Fran's got a much more newsworthy agenda. Earlier today, Fran posted the following message on Twitter, "Fran Drescher Chats with Oprah and Fighting Cancer is Always a Top Priority."
As she has courageously done since being diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2000, Fran will indeed use the Oprah appearance to talk about cancer. Following her diagnosis and radical surgery to treat the cancer, Fran chronicled her experience in the bestselling book, Cancer Schmancer (2002). In 2007, as she celebrated seven years cancer-free, Fran created the Cancer Schmancer Movement and the Cancer Schmancer Foundation. As she says on the cancerschmancer.com site, "I got famous, I got cancer and now I live to talk about it." Never one to mince words, Fran's website breaks down its mission very simply: Catching it Early. That's right, early detection is the key.
As for Fran and her ex-hubby, the two were high school sweethearts, attending Hillcrest High School in the neighborhood of Jamaica in Queens, New York. In 1977, Fran landed the blink-and-you'll-miss-it role of a smart-mouthed disco dancer named Connie in John Travolta's mega-hit, Saturday Night Fever. The following year, Fran and Peter married and her career continued to gain momentum with roles in American Hot Wax and the Wes Craven horror film, Summer of Fear.
The eighties brought about a number of film roles, including: Ragtime, Doctor Detroit, The Big Picture, Cadillac Man and of course no-nonsense record exec, Bobbi Flekman in 1984's mock-rock-umentary, This Is Spinal Tap.
Turning their real-life beginnings into a lucrative business, Fran and Peter formed the appropriately named production company,Highschool Sweethearts and created the hugely successful CBS sitcom,The Nanny.
As Fran Fine--sing along--the flashy girl from Flushing, Drescher became a nasally household name. The multiple Emmy-nominated show ran from from 1993 to 1999. About midway through the run, Fran and Jacobson also co-produced The Beautician and the Beast, a theatrical release with similar plot pints to The Nanny. Hey! It worked for TV's original sitcom creating marrieds, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, so why not?
Ironically mirroring Lucy and Desi's marriage-end, Fran and Peter separated in real-life but continued their successful business partnership until The Nanny wrapped.
Following the end of The Nanny, and her marriage to Jacobson, Fran co-starred in the short-lived CBS comedy, Princesses in 1991, Throughout the 90s and the beginning of the 00s, she and made a number of guest appearances on TV and in film. In 2004, Peter began co-executive producing WB's What I Like About You, as well as a Nanny reunion.
Fran also joined the WB line-up in 2005 as the star of Living With Fran, even guesting on Jacobson's What I Like About You during Living's debut season.
In recent years, Fran has continued to appear in TV and film projects, including dramatic rolesStrong Medicine and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as well as a 2008 guest appearance on HBO's Entourage.
In addition to her continuing acting career, Fran has also become a frequent talk show guest, stopping by everything from The Bonnie Hunt Show and Rachel Ray to Larry King and Hanity in recent months. Her preferred topic of conversation: championing others to become cancer survivors. So you see, today's Oprah visit is simply her latest outlet.
Speaking of talk shows, as 2010 was drawing to a close, Fran hosted her first-ever daytime syndicated talk show, appropriately titled The Fran Drescher Tawk Show. The limited six-market, three-week test run began November 26. If picked up, the show is expected to make it's nationwide syndicated debut later in the 2011-2012 season, just as Oprah's chatfest draws to a close.
