It may not be "The More You Know," but FOX has launched their own "Go Green" intiative for Earth Week and they are signing up their biggest name stars to entice fans to take part, too. "Green It. Mean It." is the campaign, designed to raise both viewer and employee awareness of environmental issues, and FOX talent, shows and employees are stepping up their efforts to help preserve our planet.
Here are a few of their eco-friendly activities that can be supported year round:
- FOX Talent “Green Tips”: During Earth Week, FOX talent, including House's Lisa Edelstein, The Chicago Code's Jennifer Beals, glee's Chris Colfer, Raising Hope's Martha Plimpton, Bones' David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, and Fringe's Joshua Jackson, will appear in network and affiliate on-air promos offering viewers helpful “Green Tips” on how to establish a more sustainable lifestyle. You can catch these tips throughout the week as your favorite FOX programs air.
- To better support the network’s greening efforts, FOX has revamped and re-launched the official green week website, the network’s dedicated “Green It. Mean It.” website. The site hosts videos, photos and information to help viewers track the network’s achievements and learn how they, too, can make a difference. Additionally, in an effort to promote environmental awareness and energy efficiency, American Idol will turn its homepage black for Earth Day on Friday, April 22, and spread their own eco-friendly tips on their official website.
- Local Grocery Tote Giveaway: On Wednesday, April 20, FOX employees will take shifts distributing free reusable “Green It. Mean It” grocery tote bags outside of Ralphs supermarket at 10309 West Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles to encourage shoppers to avoid using paper or plastic when carrying their groceries.
- Habitat For Humanity Build: FOX is a proud partner of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. On Thursday, April 21 in Long Beach, CA, FOX employees will join the organization in constructing affordable housing for a family in need using recycled and sustainable materials.
You can read the full list of green tips from the various FOX stars here but below we have listed some of our favorites:
- “Before you buy anything from your back-to-school list, decide what you really need. Shop for notebooks, binders, backpacks, planners and even clothing made of recycled and sustainable materials. But remember, the greenest thing you can purchase is what you already own.”- Chris Colfer
- “Did you know that oceans regulate the climate, generate oxygen and are home to some of the most fascinating creatures on earth? I do. ‘Cause I’m smart. But our oceans are being threatened by climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing practices. There is good news though. You can help by using less plastic and creating less waste. That way, it won’t end up in our oceans.” - Ellen Degeneres, who FOX still claims is a part of Idol by incorporating her here.
- “Try biking, walking, bussing or carpooling to work whenever possible. Biking to work not only keeps you in good shape, but it also cuts down your daily carbon footprint. Use a basket or a carrier rack to help carry your belongings.” - John Francis Daley
- “Check with your co-workers to make sure your workplace is doing its part to recycle. Just by recycling paper alone, offices across the country could reduce the waste they send to landfills by 50 percent. That’s 33 million tons.” - Jennifer Beals
- “Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth could save you up to five gallons a day. If each of us made this small change, the savings could add up to 1.5 million gallons: equal to what New York City consumes in 24 hours.” - David Boreanaz
- “Did you know that buying frozen food uses 10 times more energy than producing fresh food? Live smart. Buy fresh. Eat well. Renew the future.” - Gordon Ramsay
FOX’s Earth Week initiatives are only a small part of FOX’s ongoing “Green It. Mean It.” campaign. For the past six years, FOX has hosted the FOX Fall Eco-Casino party, a benefit for various eco-friendly charities, including The Nature Conservancy, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Global Green USA, among others. Last year, FOX donated two solar panels, previously used on the American Idol finale red carpet, to schools in Los Angeles and New York. This spring, FOX will donate the solar panel from its most recent Emmy Awards red carpet to an additional school.
