The new drama starring Kevin Bacon that recently premiered on FOX has all the hallmarks of a hit show. “The Following” is a thrilling new drama that is not only fast paced like “24” but at times has a dark and gritty realism that will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. The series starts out with a bloody prison escape from death row by notorious serial killer Joe Carroll played by James Purefoy. Carroll was a brilliant university professor who was obsessed with killing women and has a fascination with the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Carroll was caught years earlier by former FBI agent Ryan Hardy played Kevin Bacon. In the process of catching Carroll, Agent Hardy was stabbed which caused serious damage to his heart.
All the time that Carroll spent in prison he apparently used it to plot his escape and develop an elaborate game of cat and mouse centered on Hardy. His first act is to pick up where he left off before being caught. To figure out what Carroll next move is, the FBI sends in members of its BAU unit profile Carroll and track down all the leads. Just when you think the good guys are about to prevail; a new twist occurs. It soon becomes evident that Carroll’s plan is much bigger than the FBI had anticipated. They also soon discover that Carroll’s network of helpers is larger than anyone could have imagined.
FOX’s thrilling new drama is like watching a mini-movie that you don’t want to end. The series packs a lot of excitement into an hour. “The Following” is a dark and intense drama you would expect to see on cable. “The Following” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on FOX, WAGA-TV in Atlanta on Comcast channels 4/804 and AT&T U-Verse channels 5/1005.
