According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first broke the news Wednesday (Sept. 18), the "Private Practice" alum will play Artie, a “smooth, confidant ladies man” who sets his sights on Jess (Zooey Deschanel) while she's out at a bar with Cece (Hannah Simone), which proves to be problematic for her new relationship with Nick (Jake Johnson).
Diggs will appear in the seventh episode of the new season, which will also see the return of Damon Wayans Jr. The "Happy Endings" star played Coach in the show's pilot, and will appear in multiple episodes during the third season. The episode starts shooting next week, and will likely air in November.
Last night's season premiere drew 5.56 million viewers and a 2.9 18-49 rating, ranking ahead of newcomers "Dads" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in the key demo.
Diggs' upcoming credits include the films "Baggage Claim" and "The Best Man Holiday." Besides playing Dr. Sam Bennett in all six seasons of ABC's "Private Practice, the 42-year-old actor's other TV credits include "Ally McBeal," "The West Wing" and "Will & Grace."
