Fox's 'Gotham' will include young Bruce Wayne and classic villains

Fox chairman Kevin Reilly announced that the new series "Gotham", will include a young Bruce Wayne as well as many of the classic villains, including Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and The Riddler. The announcement came on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, during the Television Critics Association press tour.

Originally, it was announced that "Gotham" would not include Batman and instead center on the early career of Jim Gordon, played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's films, and chronicle the origins of many of the famous villains that have threatened Gotham in comics. Now it appears young Bruce Wayne will be a part of the story as well.

“The show will arc a young Bruce Wayne from a child (around 12) into the final episode of the series, when he will put on the cape,” Reilly said. “We will see how they get to become who they are as Gotham is teetering on the edge.”

The bad news is there will be no ties to the cinematic universe Warner Bros. is trying to develop. Already in pre-production, "Man of Steel 2" aka "Batman vs. Superman", will also included Wonder Woman, and possibly Robin, Aquaman, and Green Lantern depending on how many of the rumors you believe. One of the problems DC has had, at least compared to the Marvel series of movies, is they have been unsuccessful at creating a cohesive universe in which all of these characters exist.

DC already has "Arrow" on the CW, which is the adventures of Green Arrow, one of the founding members of Justice League. This season, the show has introduced the Flash, but so far DC and Warner Bros. have been committal on how and if these will tie into the movies. Years ago, Warner Bros. tried and failed to do a Batman origin series, an effort that eventually turned into "Smallville", which ran for ten season on the CW.

"Gotham" is currently in the scripting and staffing stages, but so far there have been no decisions on a premiere date for the series.

Okay, gang. What are your thoughts on Fox's attempt to bring "Gotham" to the small screen and not having it tie in to the movies?
