Fox News host blames public schools for turning Americans ignorant

There's no real doubt that many Americans lack education and are often ignorant when it comes to news and information, but one Fox News host has pointed his finger in blame in the wrong direction.

During his President's Day episode of "The O'Reilly Factor," Fox News host Bill O'Reilly highlighted what he called "ignorant America." O'Reilly decided to take the usual conservative line of attack and blame public schools for the dumbing down of the American people. O'Reilly noted a recent 2011 study that found that a large portion of the American people were unable to answer what should be easy questions, such as naming the current vice president and who the United States fought in World War 2. O'Reilly began his rant.

“It’s quite clear that the American school system is a main culprit. It’s no longer teaching history, geography, and civics in an effective way. The Internet has created a generation of self-absorbed, addicted, distracted, and ignorant people...You can now create your own world on the net, devoid of reality, and millions of American’s are doing that.”

While there is no real debate about the lack of quality education in the country, not to pin point where the problem is is troubling. According to the the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, from 2008 to 2014, 35 states have made cuts to their state education budget and the majority of them are "red" or Republican dominated states. The top eight states that have made the harshest cuts were all Republican led and have made cuts to the education budget ranging from nearly 15 percent to as high as almost 23 percent.

If Bill O'Reilly or other conservative commentators are going to point the finger of blame of American ignorance at the public school system, maybe they should also included the elected officials who continue to take money out of the programs that are causing harm to the potential intelligent of the American people.
