When the government shutdown started on October 1st, the United States government and its elected officials saw their low approval numbers drop even lower. While the reasons may vary depending on the individual you ask, Fox News believes that it's because the American people elected a president who isn't on their side.
Recent polls have shown that the United States government, from members of Congress to President Obama have seen a drop in their approval in the eyes of the American people. A recent Gallup poll shows only a 28 percent approval of the Republican party, the lowest since Gallup began asking the question in 1992. Democrats hold a 43 percent approval, low but still stronger than their colleagues across the aisle. While Congress has seen their approval number drop to single digits, President Obama has actually watched his numbers tick up. While some polls have shown that the president's favorability has dropped to as low 43 percent, a new poll from the right-wing leaning Rasmussen notes that President Obama's favorability has increased to 51 percent.
With an uneasy feeling surrounding the U.S. government, everyone seems to have found a reason to point the finger of blame. During an episode of the Fox News show "The Kelly File," Fox contributor and psychiatrist Keith Ablow was asked about the moral of the country among the American people and he pointed his finger of blame at the door step of the President of the United States who he claims is "not so utterly American" and isn't "on our side."
"When we elected someone out of fear after 9/11, I think we elected a president, uh, who we acknowledged the world would consider, well, not so bad, not so utterly American, not so on our side in a certain way. And I think what's happening now is that people are starting to wake up a little bit and say, now, wait a second. That's a crisis when you have somebody in the Oval Office who doesn't really embrace free enterprise and the things that made the country great. We have to shift course again -- shift, uh, the course will now be shifted."
Fox News has made a name for themselves by being the number one haven for anti-Obama rhetoric and extremism and Keith Ablow's reasoning for the election of Barack Obama fits their mold. With President Obama and the Affordable Care Act becoming more popular since the shutdown, Fox News and their criticism of the president is becoming old and tired.
