In what has been a long rumored mutual courtship, Channing Tatum will be joining the greatest mutant team in the world as the smooth talking thief Gambit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum will make his debut as Gambit in Fox’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” which will be the next film in the X-Men series. He will then go on to star in his own standalone spin-off solo feature film. X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed the casting on the London red carpet premiere of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” which is coming to United States theaters May 23, 2014.
Remy LeBeau, or better known by his codename Gambit, is a kinetic energy generator who uses his mutant powers by channeling energy into playing cards and launching them as weapons. Gambit is also known for his iconic staff which is his weapon of choice. The ladies man has been a prominent member of the X-Men teams in the comics since his debut in “Uncanny X-Men Annual #14” in 1990. With his nonchalant attitude and dark past, Gambit was not trusted by many of his teammates early in his tenure with the team. However, over the years he has established a strong place on X-Men rosters and has had close relationships with prominent members of the team.
What can we look forward to seeing in Gambit’s solo movie? The story will most likely be more grounded in his solo film than in the main franchise as most of Gambits backstory revolve around the Thieves Guild he left in Louisiana. Gambit of course has plenty of history with Rouge, his on-again off-again lover. Rouge has been an established X-Man in the film universe since the first X-Men film in 2000. Portrayed by actress Anna Paquin, it wouldn’t be particularly shocking for her to appear in the Gambit solo film.
As a fellow loner, Wolverine has had some notably different toned solo films that were financially successful so there could be plenty of potential for Channing Tatum to continue being Gambit past just one film.
