Whitney Houston was in talks to reprise her role as Savannah Jackson in the big screen follow up of Waiting To Exhale, it was reported Tuesday.
According to Fox, Forest Whitaker, who directed the original 1995 movie, was updating Houston on the film's progress.
"We literally have not talked about anybody for that part," Fox 2000 President Elizabeth Gabler said Tuesday, before confirming Whitaker was working with Houston. "He’d been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress."
As reported last fall, Fox gained rights to produce a film just weeks after Terry McMillan released "Getting To Happy," the literary follow up to Waiting To Exhale. While it is unclear what screenwriters will do with Houston's character, Savannah, she does play a pivotal role in the book. Without giving too much away, as I have read the book, Savannah goes through a number of challenges, both personally and with the other characters like Bernadine and Gloria, in a setting years after she moved to Phoenix (in the original movie). A good portion of the book is in fact focused on her character.
According to Gabler of Fox, there has been no discussion but "it isn’t inconceivable" that Oprah Winfrey may be willing to appear in 'Getting To Happy'.
Getting To Happy is currently in development. Terry McMillan's book, Getting To Happy, is available now.
