Fox co-host rape remark: Date rape is 'never a joke,' concealed weapons debate

A Fox co-host rape remark is receiving quite a bit of backlash this week, as Yahoo News reported this Wednesday, Feb. 20, that after a Fox News host questioned if the high number of rapes on college campuses were as prevalent as they are made to seem.

“When was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?” reported Bob Beckel, a liberal co-host of Fox News' show The Five. The co-host asked his four colleagues this question on Tuesday’s show.

“What are you talking about?" replied co-host Eric Bolling. "It’s rampant."

“In particular, date rape on campus,” added another co-host, Dana Perino.

The Department of Justice noted that in 2010, as many as one in four women in college “will be victims of attempted rape or rape before they graduate within a four-year period.” In addition, the report notes that under five percent of rape cases are actually reported to the police, potentially making this estimate even higher.

The Fox co-host rape remark came as a result of the Fox News roundtable talking about a new proposal to ban concealed weapons on college campuses throughout the state of Colorado.

“It’s why we have call boxes,” said liberal Joe Salazar on the debate. “It’s why we have safe zones. That’s why we have the whistles, because you just don’t know who you’re going to be shooting at. And you don't know if you feel like you're gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone's been following you around or if you feel like you're in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop ... pop a round at somebody."

Conservatives criticized this response, as several comparisons were then made to a mocking Twitter hashtag compaign, #Liberal Tips 2 Avoid Rape. The Twitter hashtag itself started another big debate on Twitter, as thousands of tweeters replied that the joking nature of the hashtag was offensive and should never be applied to rape.

Republican Rep. Lori Saine said:

"It is so enormously inappropriate to assume that a woman that is trained and has a concealed-carry permit will just pop off.”
