Chevrolet announced today that Four Wheeler magazine has named the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as the Four Wheeler 2014 Pickup Truck of the Year.

The Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 Crew Cab competed head to head against the Ram 2500 Outdoorsman Crew Cab, and Toyota Tundra SR5 Crewman - winning with what Four Wheeler called “one of the closest Pickup Truck of the Year scores in recent memory”.

The award followed a weeklong test evaluating on- and off-road performance of pickups and is limited to trucks that are all-new or significantly revised from the previous model year and include a a two-speed transfer case, with a production run of at least 1,500 vehicles - available in the U.S., and be on sale by January 15, 2014.

Week long testing in California covers a wide variety of terrain and targeted challenges to uncover the trucks strengths and weaknesses according to Four Wheeler. The competitors are scored based on how they perform across a series of categories.

Four Wheeler says “Since we are an off-road-based magazine, the wheeling portion of our judging carries the most weight. The total points breakdown is as follows: Trail Performance 30%, Empirical 25% (price, payload, mpg, ground clearance, etc.), On Pavement 20%, Interior 15%, and Exterior 10%. We test each vehicle just as the manufacturer offers it—this means no modifications are done to things such as tire pressure, low-hanging bumpers, or the easy-to-kill steps”.

The test vehicle for Chevrolet was the all-new Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LTZ Z71 4WD powered with the (also new) EcoTec 355 horsepower V8 - with Active Fuel Management - delivering 393 lb.-ft. of torque through its Hydramatic six-speed automatic transmission to the 20x9-inch chrome wheels.

As tested, the vehicle price was $50,475.

Some of the Four Wheeler judge’s remarks about the Silverado included highlights like “Great off-the-line power - surprisingly fun to drive” and “Best road-trip pickup of the bunch”.

The all-new Silverado has already been named a Best of the Best for 2014 by AutoWeek, 2013 Fleet Truck of the Year by Automotive and Business Fleet magazines, and the Detroit Free Press 2014 Truck of the Year. Silverado is a finalist for the 2014 North American Truck of the Year, which will be announced January 13 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Other vehicles invited to participate were the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, Ram Power Wagon, Ram 3500, and the GMC Sierra1500. They all declined for various reasons according to Four Wheeler.
