Four unrelated, and fairly random, recent items about Houston restaurants

The ever affable Charles Barkley was spotted yesterday afternoon at Pepperjack’s on Travis in downtown Houston. No telling if he enjoyed his food more so than the acquaintances who saw the former Rocket and Round Mound of Rebound. Pepperjack’s is one of a very small number of downtown restaurants that are serving on Sunday.

Concerning downtown, Brown Bag Deli recently relocated their branch on 810 Capitol a few blocks down the street to where Capitol intersects Main. The new address is 702 Main Street, and the former home of Ziggy’s.

Not too far from the city’s center, the oddly named steakhouse from Saltillo, Mexico, La Casa del Caballo, is supposed to open today on lower Westheimer, in the former space that saw short-lived stays from the suburban Tex-Mex chain Don Julio and Tony Vallone’s Caffe Bello, and a longer one from La Strada before that. It was reported by the Chronicle to be opening today, February 18, though a countdown clock on their website shows more than a day to go when this was posted. No phone number is yet listed on the La Casa del Caballo website, either.

Also in the 77006, tomorrow and all Tuesday evenings and nights from 5 to 10 PM, the underappreciated Maria Selma offers their enchilada plates for 50% off. It is quite a deal, as these are normally priced from $11.95 to $13.95, and Maria Selma does a very good job with these dishes.
