Four Top Wineries in the San Jose Bay Area (Photos)

March 21, 2013

California is noted for their wonderful wineries in the Napa Valley Region. But people who live in the San Francisco-San Jose Bay Area needn't travel as far as Napa Valley to experience wonderful vineyards and outstanding wine selections. Within a 5 to 10-mile radius of Cupertino they can hop in the car and find some of the best wines in the valley.

These local wineries have a superb selection of wines ranging from light Chardonnays to robust Cabernets. Joining a wine club can help ease the cost of purchasing these wines where club members are offered a nice discount. During the day many of these local wineries offer tastings where you can sip and swoosh up to five or more wines at a time.

The next time you're wondering what to do when guests visit the Bay Area, print out this list of local wineries, prepare a scrumptious picnic and be sure to designate a driver who will safely take you to these establishments:

Picchetti Winery - 13100 Montebello Road, Cupertino. For only $5.00 per person you can get a private wine tasting for your group. Request "Smiler" who is highly requested to provide a wonderful and historic education about wine and the Picchetti Vineyard. Smiler's vast knowledge is captivating, you will be sure to saunter away learning something new.

Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards - 23600 Big Basin Way, Saratoga. If you didn't know you were in California you might think you were transported to the Bordeaux area in France. This rustic and charming vineyard is nestled in the mountains of Santa Cruz just a few miles from Apple Headquarters in Cupertino. This vineyard was originally established in 1892 by Pierre Pourroy, a French immigrant. It was renamed Shavannah-Chanelle after the current owner's (Michael and Kellie Ballard) two daughters. The vineyard still pays tribute to Pierre with a Syrah-Zinfandel blend called "Pierre's Ghost."

Testarossa - 300-A College Avenue, Los Gatos. $25 will get you a wine tasting and tour of this gorgeous and historic Novitiate winery operated by Jesuits. Full restored, the tour is worth the price of a glass of wine. Check out the incredible wine bar which is open from 3 pm to 7 pm Thursday and Friday and from 1 pm to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Byington Vineyard and Winery - Of the four vineyards listed this is a favorite of many locals. Here you can enjoy a true wine country experience in the heart of Silicon Valley. Byington is hidden deep in the hills of Los Gatos and definitely requires a designated driver to course their way around the windy hills. The grounds are spectacular with areas to enjoy an outdoor picnic and there's even an area to wedding high above the valley. Incredible vistas and wonderful wines await.

Map out a wonderful day out the next time you have visitors to the Bay Area. Create your own Bottle Shock adventure and discover new wines in your own backyard.
