The National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalist group is comprised of the top 1,600 scoring African-American students from PSAT qualifying test takers in the eleventh grade during the 2012-2013 school year. This number represents roughly one percent of those applying for consideration in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program.
According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, close to 80 percent of semifinalists will move on to finalist status, and a little more than half of those named finalists will receive the distinguished scholarship. Those earning finalist status will be notified in January 2014. Consideration as a finalist involves an application detailing a student’s academic record, school and community activity participation, leadership, employment, and honors and awards received.
