Rafael Dolis, Zach Putnam, and Thomas Neal were all activated from the 60-day disabled list. Additionally, Darnell McDonald, J.C. Boscan, and Trey McNutt were waived.
Darnell McDonald and J.C. Boscan who both spent the majority of the 2013 season with Iowa, will become free agents. With the lack of catching depth in the organization, there is a possibility the Cubs could offer Boscan another contract but McDonald has likely appeared in his last game in the Cubs organization.
Thomas Neal and Zach Putnam have both been outrighted earlier in their career. As such, they have the option of accepting their minor league assignment or refusing the assignment and electing free agency. It is unknown what they will decide at this time.
Rafael Dolis and Trey McNutt will likely remain in the Cubs organization and there is a good chance they will both be members of the Iowa Cubs pitching staff in 2014. Dolis appeared in 25 games for Iowa between 2012 and 2013, posting a 3.81 ERA over 26 innings pitched.
McNutt, ranked the 24th best prospect in the Cubs organization according to Baseball America, has been on the Cubs radar for many years. Injuries have derailed his development and in 2012 he was switched from primarily being a starter to a reliever. After four seasons at the double-A level, a promotion looks to be in order in 2014.
