Whether you hit the gym before work or you do some body weight exercises at home right before bed, you've probably got a routine all picked out that you've been sticking with for quite some time. However, you might be neglecting some truly excellent exercises in your daily routine; here are four of the best exercises that you're most likely not doing enough of.
Hit the water
When people think of swimming, it's usually not as an exercise but as a summertime recreation activity. The truth is though that swimming is one of the most effective full-body exercises out there and is especially low-impact on your joints and muscles. It's a great full-body exercise no matter the time of year; and if your gym or fitness center doesn't have a pool you can easily find one at your local YMCA.
Walk the plank
Have you been doing a few reps of abdominal crunches or sit-ups every day? You probably have. However, it's a safe bet that you've probably been neglecting one of the best abdominal exercises out there: the plank. Planking is one of the best all-around core exercises for you, especially because it's designed specifically to prevent excessive flexion and rotation in your abdomen. Give yourself a rest; knock off the crunches and replace them with planks. It will be better for your overall core and make your back ache less, too.
Go for a swing
Stop giving those kettlebells a wide berth and step on up: the kettlebell swing is one of the best full-body exercises that helps both strengthen your arms and your hips, and it's inecredibly easy to do. If your gym doesn't have any kettlebells or if you're working out at home you can easily use a dumbbell just as well; keep a strong grip on it and remember, it's a swing, not a shot-put.
Burp it out
If there's any particular exercise that never shows up on anyone's fitness regimen it's the burpee. The little exercise with the funny name but a serious payoff involves dropping to the ground into the push-up position then gathering yourself up and leaping high to the sky, and it's as effective a workout you can possibly do. It's also grueling and will get you sweating in no time, so you know it's working when you finish a set and your entire body feels like it's on fire. Now do two more sets and call it a day.
