The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (a physical weakness or ailment).” Our health is our own responsibility. Only we know what is right for our bodies and we need to learn to “listen” to what our body is trying to tell us when it is out of balance. We are responsible for choosing something that is healthy over something that is not healthy. Again, you never want to deprive yourself, but there is a common ground for each of us.
The first step in achieving and maintaining health is to take our health into our own hands. The second step is taking the appropriate steps (i.e. exercising, cutting calories, etc.) to achieve the results that you want.
According to the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, “a positive mental attitude is the real foundation for optimal health.” We all have the drive in us to be the best that we can be and doesn’t that include having a healthy body? “Achieving self-actualization begins by taking personal responsibility for your own positive mental state, your life, your current situation, and your health.”
Below is a list of key steps to help you develop and maintain a positive attitude (by the way, this is key if you are going to embark on a weight loss journey!).
· Become an optimist
· Become aware of self-talk (especially if it is negative)
· Ask better questions
· Employ positive affirmations
· Set positive goals (and reward yourself when you achieve them – preferably with a nonfood item – i.e. a massage, a workout DVD, new clothes, etc.)
· Practice positive visualization
· Laugh long and often
· Read or listen to inspiring messages
