Four Cards selected in MLS draft, three in first round

The 2011 Louisville men's soccer season started with very high expectations and a #1 ranking, but ended in bitter defeat at the hands of UCLA at Cardinal Park in the Elite Eight.

Now, there is something for Louisville soccer fans to be excited about before next season begins!

Thursday, January 12 marked the 2012 MLS Superdraft - and Louisville was one of only two schools to have four players drafted (Creighton being the other), and the only school to have three players drafted in the first round.

The first Cardinal off the board was midfielder Nick DeLeon, drafted seventh overall by DC United.  The 5'10," 170 lb senior from Pheonix earned All-Great Lakes region honors in his final two seasons with Louisville.

Next up was defender Austin Berry, drafted ninth overall by the Chicago Fire.  A 6'2," 180 lb senior from of Cincinnati, Ohio, was a second-team All American as redshirt junior and third-team All American this past season.

The final Cardinal selected in the first round was forward Colin Rolfe, drafted eighteenth overall by the MLS Cup runner-up Houston Dynamo.  A 6'0," 175 lb senior, Rolfe led the Cardinals with 9 goals this past season.

Rounding out Louisville's drafted players, midfielder Kenney Walker was taken with the 38th and final selection by the defending MLS Cup Champions, the L.A. Galaxy.  Walker is a 5'9," 175 lb senior out of Wickliffe, Ohio.
