The Birmingham Police Department dispatched four officers to 1307 44th Street North in Birmingham at approximately 4:00 p.m. to execute two outstanding robbery warrants against Sister Shemeco Tawan Riley, 38 and to take her into custody.
When the officers arrived at the address, they saw the suspect as she came near the front door but then turned and walked into the rear of the apartment. She then came back and came outside where she approached the officers. As she reached the officers she produced a box cutter and began cutting them. She cut three of them and pushed the other off the elevated apartment deck.
The officers were still able to restrain the suspect and arrested her on the two robbery charges. All four officers were treated for their wounds at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Hospital. None of the injuries were thought to be life threatening.
Birmingham Police Chief, A.C. Roper, commended the officers for their courageous restraint. "This incident quickly escalated into a deadly force encounter; but the officers showed courageous restraint under the circumstances. We're very fortunate we didn't lose an officer today," Roper said.
In addition to the two robbery charges, Riley now faces four possible attempted murder charges.
