According to an Oct. 6 post from Times Online, Soul Asylum is on tour across the country with fellow alt-rockers Fountains of Wayne and Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, and the show came to New York City's Webster Hall on Oct. 5.
All three acts have been delivering alt-rock gems for over two decades, but Soul Asylum singer Dave Pirner is enjoying his journey now more than ever.
“It’s always a blast traveling across America seeing how everyone is doing, and seeing how things have changed,” Pirner said.
Soul Asylum's performance in New York City was both a celebration of the past and a glimpse into the future, as the band effortlessly blended older material with selections from Delayed Reaction, their rock gem from last year.
Drawing heavily from 1995's iconic Let Your Dim Light Shine, Soul Asylum revved up the crowd with classic tunes such as "Runaway Train," before delivering "Somebody to Shove" towards the end of the set.
“They do try to put together these package tours more and more, and it’s a whole different paradigm,” Pirner said. “We were just out on the road with The Wailers, which was great; not that we’re known for being a reggae band. I was very hesitant to do it at first, but the band was interested so I said OK, and it turned out to be fun.”
Soul Asylum got the crowd moving with their big hits from the 90s, but there was no letdown in intensity when the band performed newer tunes from Delayed Reaction and other albums from the mid-2000s.
“This is where we are right now, and there’s been a certain amount of nuttiness going on," Pirner said. "I’ve got a good feeling about this tour. There’s a sense of adventure.”
Fountains of Wayne delivered some smooth nostalgia of their own, delivering a slew of '90s hits, before rocking the house with an encore of "Stacy's Mom" and "Radiation Vibe."
The band played a lively show that showcased many of the highlights of their 15-year career. The catchy choruses hit hard and the band was having a blast on stage.
Delivering their catchy, infectious pop-rock songs with an infectious energy, Fountains of Wayne put on a show that was enjoyed by fans of all ages.
